Chapter Eighteen
Lara woke Monday to a gray drizzle. She girded herself for another day of patients and rolled over looking for a morning hug, but Trevor had already gone. After a quick shower, she slid into a long black wool skirt, pale mauve silk blouse, and the black cashmere shawl from the previous day, since it was still draped over the back of a chair.
Was last night even real? What would have happened if I’d been raised by someone besides Aunt Mary? Someone who actually knew something about what I can do with my gift?
She checked her pager, relieved she hadn’t slept through a summons that came in during the night. Settling on a riser near the bottom of the stairs, she scrolled through messages and returned calls, before heading to the kitchen.
“Morning, Trev. Mmm, looks wonderful. How long have you been up anyway?” Lara petted an excited Gunter who’d left a trail of urine droplets in his haste to greet her.
“Whoops!” Trevor dampened a cloth at the sink and wiped the floor. “He’ll get over that as he gets older. I just had him out. How’s your day shaping up?”
“Just got a call from Arabel. She came in early to do some rescheduling so we wouldn’t be working after dark. Anyway, my entire morning cancelled. I have patients at two, three, and four. So we could eat this marvelous breakfast, let it digest for a bit, then go for a run.” She smiled hopefully at him.
He groaned. “Ugh! My legs are still sore from last time.”
“They’ll get better. All you have to do is make a commitment to do it more.”
“As long as Arabel is switching things around, why don’t you have her clear Thursday and Friday? We could take a long weekend. Since I couldn’t sleep, I went online and checked out maps and real estate listings. We ought to take a look at the Ellensburg and Leavenworth areas. They’re a good place to start, since they’re close.”
“But that would mean I might not make enough this month to cover the mortgage on the office building. I’ve had a bunch of cancellations, other than the two from this morning. The damned insurance companies are six months behind paying me, which doesn’t help. And my malpractice insurance just went up again.”
“We have enough money.” His voice was gentle. “We’d have enough even if you never worked again.” Trevor laid their plates on the table. Returning with two steaming cups of coffee, he sat down. “It must be your deprived childhood that makes you think we’re always on the brink of starvation.”
She grinned at him. “Now who’s being a therapist?
“Maybe it’s catching. I’ve had twenty years watching you to bone up on how to do it.”
“Okay, I’ll clear the end of the week,” she said and grabbed her phone. When she hung up a few minutes later, he smiled.
“See, that wasn’t so hard. What’d Arabel have to say?”
“That I should take more time off.”
“Well, you should.”
“I’ll take it under advisement.” Lara rolled her eyes.
